Mongoose Publishing will release a new edition of the classic Paranoia RPG in 2015.
The game reboot is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter and has raised £64,099 (approximately $103,547) from 1,582 backers ($65.45/backer average). The project goal of £30,000 ($48,387.10 approx.) was surpassed in the first 24 hours of the campaign. Backer fulfillment is scheduled for June 2015, with trade release to follow.
Paranoia is a dystopian sci-fi role-playing game originally designed by Greg Costikyan, Dan Gelber, and Eric Goldberg, and released in 1984 by West End Games. The game won the 1984 Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Rules, and was inducted into the Origins Awards Hall of Fame in 2007. Mongoose acquired the rights to the game in 2004 (see "Mongoose Revives 'Paranoia'"). The company released a new, 25th anniversary line for the game in 2009 (see "Mongoose Ending 'Babylon 5,' 'Paranoia' Sales").
The new edition has been updated to include more modern elements for the 21st Century (though Communists are still present, terrorists have replaced them as the main threat). The principal designer is James Wallis (Baron Munchausen, Once Upon a Time), with a team that that includes Eric Goldberg, Greg Costikyan, Grant Howitt and Paul Dean. The game system has been simplified to be played quickly, with streamlined mechanics and the addition of Computer Dice and cards that represent equipment, mutations and more, so players can get right to game play in 10 -15 minutes.
Regarding trade release, Matthew Sprange of Mongoose Publishing told ICv2,"(T)he retail/Red release will likely be Summer of 2015, with the current contents listed on the KS site (three books, dice, character cards, card deck)." MSRP has not been finalized.
