Free Comic Book Day kicks off Children’s Book Week this year, and the connection is being supported by a range of organizations, including the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, FCBD organizer Diamond Comic Distributors, publisher trade association Children’s Book Council, and its charity Every Child a Reader.  Every Child a Reader is the organizer of Children’s Book Week and Children’s Book Council a sponsor; 2015 will be the 96th annual event.

Free Comic Book Day is a great kick-off for Children’s Book Week because as usual, a significant share of the free comics offered is directed at young readers (see "FCBD 2015 Gold Comics Announced").

Diamond and the CBLDF are focusing on what comics offer kids, with cross-industry promotions and targeted resources for parents and educators.  They will also partner with authors, publishers, comic, and book retailers to create Children’s Book Week events spotlighting comics.  Events will include storytime, author appearances, displays and more.  These will be part of a larger range of events surrounding Children’s Book Week, supported by Every Child A Reader and Children’s Book Council.  Events can be publicized on the CBLDF, Every Child a Reader, and Children’s Book Council websites by emailing the organizations at info@cbldf.org and cbc.info@cbcbooks.org.

Three-time Newbery Honoree and CBLDF board member Jennifer L. Holm (Babymouse) spoke to her feelings about the event.  "When I was a child, my love of reading started with comic books," she said.  "Today, as a comics creator myself, and as a mom, I'm excited by how much extraordinary storytelling is happening for young people in comics.  Children's Book Week is a wonderful time for people to come together and share the love of reading comics with kids everywhere!"
