Green Ronin has announced a new edition of its Blue Rose roleplaying game, which was considered rather controversial when it was first published a decade ago. The new edition, which utilizes the AGE Roleplaying Game system, is currently being funded on Kickstarter, and will release to trade in August 2016.
First published in 2004 (see “Green Ronin’s Blue Rose”), the Blue Rose RPG was inspired by the fantasy fiction of such novelists as Mercedes Lackey, Diane Duane, and Tamora Pierce. Far from the typical “sword and sorcery” fantasy fare that is the mainstay of most fantasy RPGs, Blue Rose was designed to explore concepts of self-discovery, friendship, and cooperation for the good of all. The game was targeted towards women and members of the LGBT community, and was considered “threatening” by some.
It was ground-breaking in terms of its willingness to embrace concepts of gender equality and an inclusive approach towards gay, bi, and polyamorous characters. These themes were a critical element of the game setting, featuring prominently in the game world’s mythology and society.
The new edition of Blue Rose is built on Green Ronin’s AGE system, the same system used in its successful Dragon Age RPG and the soon-to-be released Titansgrave: The Ashes of Valkana, featured on the Geek & Sundry web series (see “Details on ‘Fantasy AGE’ and ‘Titansgrave’ Releases”).
The Kickstarter campaign has already attracted more than 400 backers, and has more than doubled its modest $10,000 goal with 27 days left in the campaign. The campaign includes two retailer pledge levels: one for the standard version of the game, the other for the “Special Edition” Kickstarter exclusive version that will feature a blue leatherette hardcover, ribbon bookmark, and full-color interior.
The final specifications of the rulebook will depend on what stretch goals are achieved in the Kickstater campaign, but Green Ronin’s Chris Pramas told ICv2 that it would be at least a 192 page softcover black and white book, and hopes to be able to expand it to 300 pages, full color hard cover. The new edition will include a new cover by Stephanie Pui-mun Law, who did the previous Blue Rose covers.
