Among the fans of the Back to the Future movie trilogy, October 21, 2015 is known as "Future Day:" the "future" date when Doc Brown and Marty McFly traveled to in Back to the Future Part II to fix future-Marty’s family trouble.
Since 2012, random pranksters have been doctoring the date to read the current date along with the post stating "Today is the Day Marty McFly arrives in the future!" Well, the real "Future Day" is coming, and there are numerous Back to the Future product releases and fan-organized events planned for that day.
At San Diego Comic-Con, IDW Publishing announced a comic miniseries launching on "Future Day" which explores events in the movies from other characters’ perspective (see "'Back to the Future' Gets Comic Adaptation"). Harper Collins is releasing Back to the Future: The Ultimate Visual Histor,y a behind-the-scenes book detailing the making of the movie trilogy on that date as well. The 224-page hardcover has MSRP $50.00.
Earlier this year, USAopoly released both a collectible Yahtzee dice game and a licensed Monopoly game to capitalize on the upcoming date (see "'Yahtzee: Legend of Zelda,' 'Munchkin Zombies: Walking Dead,' More").
Diamond has released a franchise-specific e-catalog which includes these releases, as well as other toys, apparel and collectibles available to comic book specialty shops to support a comic-store based Back to the Future Day celebration.
Universal Picture Home Entertainment will release the Back to the Future 30th Anniversary Trilogy home video release on October 20. The limited edition DVD and Blu-ray package will include all three movies, the complete animated series, a new bonus disc, and a 64-page book. The package will be a collectible light-up "Flux Capacitor." MSRP is $99.88 for Blu-ray/$88.88 for DVD.
The announcement of the set also stated that Universal will be re-release the trilogy in select theaters, though no additional information has yet been shared.
A Back to the Future documentary, Back in Time, will release on VOD, DVD/Blu-ray and in select theaters on "Future Day." MSRP is $29.95 for Blu-ray/$24.95 for DVD.
A 30th Anniversary "We’re Going Back" fan-organized, five-day event begins on "Future Day" held in Los Angeles, which includes Universal Studios tours, a cosplay ball & costume contest, movie screenings, and possible celebrity autograph and photo sessions.
Back to the Future Part II was released in 1989, and the sequel saw Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) begin the film by journeying into the future (2015) to stop his future son from ending up in prison.
