Hasbro has announced on Twitter that it will add a token for Rey, the lead character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, to its movie-licensed version of Monopoly. Previously the set included Luke Skywalker, Finn, Kylo Ren, and inexplicably, Darth Vader. “We love your passion for Rey, and are happy to share that we will be including her in the Monopoly: Star Wars game, available later this year,” the Tweet said.
Criticism had mounted over the character’s absence using the hashtag #WheresRey; it fit what some see as a Hasbro habit of ignoring female heroes in its movie license toy lines.
Earlier this week, Hasbro said it had skipped Rey in the set, which was released in September, to avoid giving away the plot, although the prominence of the character had been clear since at least April (see “’Force Awakens Panel Reveals’”). A day later, Hasbro made the decision to just change the set.
