As predicted in ICv2's coverage of the bevy of great graphic novels debuting at ComicCon (see 'Innovative Graphic Novels Debut At San Diego'), the first edition of 10,000 copies of Craig Thompson's Blankets has sold out quickly from publisher Top Shelf Comics. The weighty 592-page graphic novel has sold extremely well despite its commensurately hefty cover price of $29.95 and the fact that the reviews from the mainstream press, including a rave from Time Magazine last week, are just beginning to kick in. This coming-of-age saga set in the snow shrouded small towns of northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula has the potential to break out of the comics ghetto and reach a wider literary and academic audience. Blankets goes into a second printing this week, and given the accumulated weight of its overwhelmingly positive reviews and word-of-mouth, the second printing could disappear as quickly as the first. Blankets is a book worth monitoring closely through the coming holiday season and beyond.
Strong Reviews Could Do The Same For The Second
