Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson confirmed plans via Instagram that he will star in Sony Pictures’s long-gestating Doc Savage feature.
"It's official," Johnson said in the post. "For all comic book fans you already know the world's first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the ‘Man of Bronze’ himself Clark ‘Doc’ Savage."
After detailing the character’s lengthy pedigree, Johnson added "But here's the #1 reason I'm excited to become Doc Savage... HE'S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!"
The Doc Savage project has been in the works for a while. Director Shane Black was tied to the film in 2010, and confirmed he was still working on the film in 2013 (see "Black Returns to 'Doc Savage'"). Black penned the script with Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys, Death Note) and Charles Mondry (Death Note), according to Variety. Black will also produce though his Seven Bucks Productions along with Hiram Garcia. Also producing will be Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, and Michael Uslan.
Dynamite Entertainment has been producing Doc Savage comics (see "Dynamite Enters 'Altered States'") since DC dumped the pulp lines in 2012 “(see "DC Dumps the Pulps").
