According to Internet Retailer, wholesale trading on eBay grew 465% in the second quarter vs. the year ago period. The article attributed the increased sales to a redesign of the wholesale area of the eBay Website, with new organization of its 200 categories. Among the categories of interest to pop culture retailers are toys, DVDs, trading cards (including CCGs) and comics. The comics listings were mostly older lots and the CCGs were of limited interest, but in both toys and DVDs there were significant numbers of recent releases at less than wholesale prices. While the auction format is unlikely to supplant catalogues for most products retailers want to buy, eBay does appear to be a good place for retailers to look for bargains, especially on high volume recent releases.
