Global anime providers Crunchyroll and FUNimation announced a partnership to share titles across streaming, home video, and electronic sell-through. FUNimation will focus on home video and electronic sell-through of anime, as well as English-language dubbed streaming; while Crunchyroll will continue creating subtitled, streaming anime.
FUNimation will now take over distribution of Crunchyroll’s titles through home video and electronic sell-through, including titles previously announced for home video by Crunchyroll. Home video releases will include both the subbed and dubbed versions. Titles planned for release include Ace Attorney, Alderamin on the Sky, Bungo Stray Dogs, Joker Game, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress and ReLife, with more to come.
On the streaming front, beginning this week Crunchyroll viewers will have access to subtitled versions of current Funimation simulcast titles including D. Gray-man Hallow, First Love Monster, Puzzle & Dragons X, Cowboy Bebop, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, and Psycho-Pass. Soon, FunimationNow viewers will be able to watch dubbed versions of 91 Days, Mob Psycho 100, Orange, Free! -Iwatobi Swim Club and The Testament of Sister New Devil.
There was no mention in the announcement of any impact on FUNimation’s theatrical release business. FUNimation is releasing TOHO’s Godzilla: Resurgence in U.S. theaters this fall (see "TOHO's 'Godzilla: Resurgence' Scheduled for U.S. Theaters").
The Kadokawa Corporation announced a strategic alliance with Crunchyroll for anime earlier this year (see “Kadokawa Buys Majority Stake in Yen Press”).
