The 10-episode comedy got a straight-to-series order and will air starting in 2018 on Freeform, Disney’s cable network for younger viewers. Kevin Biegel (Cougar Town, Scrubs) is in negotiations to write and serve as showrunner. Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory with executive produce the series with Biegel.
New Warriors will feature a team of six super-powered young people. Squirrel Girl is the only member of the team revealed in the announcement. The most recent incarnation of the comic book team included Justice, Speedball, Silhouette, Nova, Scarlet Spider, Hummingbird, Sun Girl, Haechi, and Water Snake (see "All New Marvel NOW! Announcements Round-Up"). The series joins Cloak and Dagger on Freeform (see "Leads Cast for 'Marvel's Cloak & Dagger'").
Marvel’s Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic debuted in January 2015 to largely positive reviews and enthusiastic fanbase delighted by the comic’s empowering central character. Vulture named the fourth volume of the series one of the best of 2016 (see "Vulture, Barnes & Noble Release Best Graphic Novel Lists").
