Designed by Brad Brooks (Letter Tycoon, Aloha: The Spirit of Hawaii), Rise of Tribes takes the civilization-building genre back to the stone age. As the leaders of prehistoric tribes, players explore a world built from modular hex tiles, gathering resources, establishing villages, and developing technologies while they pursue goals called “achievements.” The first player to gather 15 points from these actions wins the game.
The game system is built around a dice placement mechanic. Players roll custom dice on their turn, then assign them to actions on their player board, pushing old dice out of play. The combinations of dice on the player’s board then determines the effectiveness of their actions, and can influence the actions of other players. More experienced players can add leader cards to the game, making each player’s tribe unique by offering special abilities. The game is intended for 2 to 4 players, ages 10 and up, and takes less than an hour to play.
Rise of Tribes will be produced in two versions. The Standard Edition includes 15 hex tiles, 80 wooden meeples, 4 player boards, 14 custom dice, 60 goal cards, 12 event cards, 6 leader cards, 4 scoring discs, and more than 70 cardboard tokens. MSRP is $50.00. The Deluxe Upgrade Edition Kit replaces the cardboard tokens with wooden pieces, and has an MSRP of $25.00. Backer fulfillment is currently planned for March, with trade release to follow.Breaking Games is funding the project through a Kickstarter campaign which shot past its funding goals in the first half hour. With 29 days remaining in the campaign, it has attracted $68,648 in pledged support from 1,072 backers (an average of $64.04 per backer). Retailers who want to participate can join Breaking Games’ Retailer Portal to pre-order the game and receive promos and a free-standing in-store display. A Breaking Games representative told ICv2 that promotional items will be offered for first print run sales through all channels.
