Inspired by this summer’s box office blockbuster Wonder Woman, which took in a total of $813.2 million worldwide, Millennium is looking to produce a female heroine-led picture, and has scooped up Sheena, a property that predates even Wonder Woman (1941) as the first female comic book character to headline her own title (1938). Sheena is an orphan who grew up in the jungle, learned to speak with animals, and became a proficient fighter.
Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Joe Gatta, Boaz Davidson and John Thompson will produce the film, as well as Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell. The film is currently eying a start in summer 2018.
In 1955 model Irish McCalla played Sheena in a 26-epsiode syndicated TV series. The 1984 Columbia Pictures film Sheena stared Tanya Roberts as Sheena. Columbia/TriStar produced a 35-episode series that began in 2000 with Gena Lee Nolin playing Sheena. The latter two were paired together in Mill Creek’s recent August home video collection, which also has five episodes of the 1955 show (see “DVD Round-Up: 'Alien: Covenant,' 'Legends of Tomorrow,' 'Riverdale,' 'Once Upon a Time,' & 'Sheena'”).Dynamite currently has the license for Sheena comics, and launched a new series last month (see “Preview: 'Sheena' #0 (Plus #1 Covers)”).
