New York Comic Con News -- Netflix and Marvel have canceled two events for The Punisher. The companies have called off a panel at NYCC and an event in Paris. The decision was made in light of the mass shooting that took place Sunday night in Las Vegas, leaving 59 dead and more than 500 people wounded.

Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) is set to reprise the role of the armed vigilante in the series and would have been one of the panelists at NYCC, alongside Jeph Loeb and other series stars. Given the character’s propensity for ultraviolent gunplay, Netflix and Marvel decided to withdraw the events, both of which would have taken place on Saturday.

Netlfix and Marvel released a joint statement regarding the decision:

“We are stunned and saddened by this week’s senseless act in Las Vegas. After careful consideration, Netflix and Marvel have decided it wouldn’t be appropriate for Marvel’s The Punisher to participate in New York Comic Con. Our thoughts continue to be with the victims and those affected by this tragedy.”

Collider shared NYCC’s response to the panel cancelation:

“New York Comic Con wholeheartedly supports Netflix & Marvel’s decision to cancel Saturday’s The Punisher panel. NYCC takes great pride in offering fans the best in pop culture programming and we are working tirelessly to fill that time spot at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. We will continue to update fans via our social channels throughout the weekend.”

Variety reports that Netflix had planned to screen two episodes of the series and simulcast the NYCC panel during an event called Nuit Noire in Paris, France. That event was also cancelled.
