According to the Hollywood Reporter Brett Matthews has been chosen to write the screenplay for a theatrical film based on the Bionicle toys. The first Bionicle film, a direct-to-DVD affair, Bionicle: Mask of Light, debuted this fall and spent a number of weeks near the top of the children's VHS and DVD lists. Apparently its performance was solid enough to insure the continuation of the ambitious slate of Bionicle movies, though the producers have not yet announced if they have met their stated goal of selling four million units worldwide. A second direct-to-video CGI feature, currently known as Bionicle 2, is now in production. The feature film, which Matthews is scripting, will be co-produced by Miramax and the Danish toy giant Lego. Like the two direct-to video titles, the Bionicle feature film will feature computer animation, and as such it will represent Miramax's first theatrical CGI family film. Miramax, which is allied with Disney, at first left the children's market to its corporate parent, but has recently altered course and optioned a number of properties with strong appeal to young viewers (Spy Kids, etc. see 'Miramax to Produce a Third Bionicle Film').
