Variety reports that comedian Jerry Seinfeld has signed to write, produce and star in a computer animated feature film entitled Bee Movie.  Dreamworks, headed by Seinfeld cronies Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg, is the major studio behind this saga of anthropomorphized bees working in a highly structured 'urban' environment, which may bear more than a passing resemblance to the upper West Side of Manhattan.

While traditional 2D animation may be in trouble in the U.S., the success of Ice Age and the Pixar Pics has led to the greenlighting of an increasing number of CGI animated features.  With Seinfeld's incredible clout, which stems from the long running popularity of his TV series, the only thing that could stand in the way of Bee Movie would be its author's own dissatisfaction or boredom with the project.  The typical 3-year gestation process of an animated feature may well test the patience of Seinfeld, a stand-up comedian used to immediate feedback on his efforts.  However, in addition to the title's delicious pun, Bee Movie has a central conceit that could well prove amusing when married to Seinfeld's observational 'comedy of manners' humor, which made his TV series such a hit.

Judging from his previous preferences, Seinfeld is likely to make Bee Movie a movie for adults, which would certainly be a step in the right direction for theatrical animation in the US, which has traditionally pandered almost exclusively to the 'kiddie' audience and has stubbornly remained far less 'hip' than animated American TV series such as The Simpsons, Futurama, and the Family Guy.
