This week Variety reviewed the $45 million Blueberry movie, a French/Mexican/English co-production based on the 30-volume series of graphic novels written by Jean-Michel Charlier and illustrated by Jean 'Moebius' Giraud. Unfortunately the Lieutenant Blueberry comic books, which were originally published in the U.S. by Marvel are no longer available. Still the new film, which was six years in the making, should stir interest in the property thanks to a strong visual style and an international cast, which includes Michael Madsen, Juliette Lewis, Eddie Izzard, Ernest Borgnine, Colm Meaney, and Djimon Hounsou.
Variety found the film to be 'the most mystical approach to the Western this side of El Topo,' and praised the film as 'visually ravishing...The camera floats and swirls in the service of widescreen compositions that honor the bold graphic placement of the comics.' Too bad the visually stunning Blueberry comics are not available in the U.S. Perhaps this film will spur American interest in one of the great comic book epics of the twentieth century and result in the reappearance of the Lt. Blueberry graphic novels on this side of the Atlantic.
