The first book of 2020 to make the kids’ top ten list is FGTeeV Presents: Into the Game! FGTeeV, for the uninitiated, is a YouTube channel where parents and children play video games together, and this graphic novel, published by HarperAlley, is based on that channel. (HarperAlley is the new kids’ graphic novel imprint from the book publisher HarperCollins, and older HarperCollins titles are already being rebranded as HarperAlley.)
It’s safe to say that if a graphic novel with an unusual string of capital letters in its name cracks the kids’ chart, it’s from HarperAlley/HarperCollins and ties in with a gaming YouTube channel. They published PopularMMOS Presents A Hole New World, which broke onto the chart in June 2018 (see "June 2018 NPD BookScan – Top 20 Kids Graphic Novels") and stayed on the chart for five months; PopularMMOS Presents Enter the Mine, which did the same in June 2019; and DanTDM: Trayaurus and the Enchanted Crystal, which was one of the top ten kids’ graphic novels of 2017 (see "Full Year 2017 BookScan – Top 20 Kids Graphic Novels").
The other new title in the top 20 is Karen’s Witch, which is a Baby-Sitters Little Sister book, a spinoff of the Baby-Sitters Club series, so its presence on the chart is considerably less surprising.
The rest of the top 20 is pretty much the usual: All eight Dog-Man books, all five of Raina Telgemeier’s original graphic novels, and the rest of the usual suspects.
In terms of market share, 17 titles are from Graphix, two from HarperCollins, and one from First Second Books.
