NBC's acquisition of Universal Pictures wasn't even complete when the network began talking about adding Transylvania, a TV series related to Universal's Van Helsing movie, to its fall schedule (see 'NBC Plans Horror Series for Fall'). Evidently Van Helsing, which has earned just over $100 million at the domestic box office in its first 3 weeks of release, wasn't a big enough hit, because Variety is reporting that NBC has passed on Transylvania. According to Variety NBC executives felt the cost of the series could not be justified in the current financial climate of network television. Perhaps another network will step in and rescue the series, which is being developed by Universal, but at the moment Transylvania is another example of corporate synergy via acquisition, which just didn't work out as planned.
