Variety is reporting that George Romero will write and direct Land of the Dead, the fourth film in his series of cult-favorite zombie films that also includes Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead.  Production for the new horror picture will start in October in either Winnipeg or Pittsburgh (site of the original Night of the Living Dead).  In Land of the Dead the zombies have taken over the entire world except for one walled city, which could be in danger as the zombies evolve from their original lumbering brain dead form into something much more dangerous.

A recent remake of the second film in Romero's zombie series, Dawn of the Dead, has earned close to $100 million worldwide in 2004, and has also spawned an on-going comic book series (see 'Dawn of the Dead Comic').
