May is here, and the summer showbiz news is starting to shape up. Time for a round-up!

The Super Mario Bros. Movie crossed the billion dollar mark for global box office over the weekend, according to Variety.  The powerful plumbers and their pals were well on their way to making a historical run for a video game adaptation a few weeks ago when they set a five-day U.S./Canada box office record at $204.6 million (see "'Super Mario Bros.' Sets Record").  The movie is still on the top of the box office charts four weekends after release, and the best performing movie of 2023 to date.

Rihanna will voice Smurfette in Paramount and Nickelodeon's upcoming The Smurfs Movie, according to Deadline.  She is also producing this movie and providing original songs for its soundtrack.  This movie is scheduled to hit theaters in February 14, 2025 (see "Best in Shows -- 2025").

Netflix has released a teaser trailer for the third season of The Witcher (below), in which Minnie Driver joins the cast (see "’The Witcher’ News").  This third season will mark the end of Henry Cavill in the lead role, which will transition to Liam Hemsworth in Season 4 (see “Cavill Out”). Season 3 will drop in two chunks: a five-episode Volume 1 on June 29, and a three-episode Volume 2 on July 27.

Paramount Animation, Hasbro, and eOne have announced the voice cast for Transformers One, a new animated movie, according to Deadline.  The new movie, executive produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Josh Cooley, will feature a voice cast including Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Jon Hamm, and Laurence Fishburne.  The movie will release on July 19, 2024 (see "Best in Shows -- 2024").

Marvel has signed Nic Pizzolatto on to write the new Blade movie, according to Variety.  Pizzolato is the creator of Max's True Detective anthology series, which featured Mahersala Ali, the star of Blade (see "'Blade' Movie News"), in its Season 3.

Danny and Michael Philippou are in talks to direct Legendary's new Street Fighter adaptation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The duo directed the horror film Talk to Me, and are reportedly closing negotiations with Legendary to once again bring this franchise to the big screen.  Street Fighter last saw a live action movie adaptation in 2014 with Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, and previous to that, was in 2008 with Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li (see "'Street Fighter' Opens February 27th").
