Andrews McMeel is reissuing Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes in a new format that is designed to be affordable and portable while re-creating the feel of reading the comic as a newspaper strip.
The Calvin and Hobbes Compendium will consist of seven two-volume sets, to be released every fall and spring through 2026, collecting the full ten-year run of the strip. The first set, containing nearly 500 strips, will be released on August 29, 2023, with an MSRP of $19.99.
The new books are printed in a 9" x 6" landscape format, similar to the way the comics were first presented in newspapers, and each two-book set comes in a 6" x 9" vertical-format slipcase for ease of shelving. Watterson was involved in the design of the new series and chose cover art for each one from the original colored Sunday comics.
Although Watterson retired from the strip in 1995, it remains popular, with over 50 million Calvin and Hobbes collections sold to date.
Watterson is collaborating with artist John Kascht on a new graphic novel to be published in October 2023 (see “New Graphic Novel Coming from ‘Calvin and Hobbes’ Creator Bill Waterson”).
