Jeff Smith, the creator of Bone and Tuki, suffered cardiac arrest on August 13 and has cancelled his appearances for the rest of the year.
Smith’s wife Vijaya Iyer made the announcement on the official Cartoon Books account on Twitter, saying “There will be a long road to recovery, so regrettably we must cancel the remainder of his book tour this year.”
The official Jeff Smith Facebook page listed the cancelled events, including Rob Con in Virginia; CXC in Columbus, Ohio; Bedrock Con in Texas; and New York Comic Con, adding, "We hope this is just a bump in the road and that Jeff will see you all next year."
Both social media posts received hundreds of comments wishing Smith well, from fellow creators (including Kazu Kibuishi, James Kochalka, Andy Runton, and Tim Fielder), industry figures, and fans.
Bone: More Tall Tales, by Smith and frequent collaborator Tom Sniegoski, is slated for release on September 5, 2023 (see "Jeff Smith Goes Back to Boneville").
