WizKids has announced that its second expansion -- Whirlwind--will be released in October, 2001. Whirlwind will be arranged like the first expansion, Lancers, containing three figures of varying rarity plus one mounted figure in every booster. There are 142 characters added in this release, some of which will be from the newest race, the Krugg. According to Mage Knight creator Jordan Weisman, 'Whirlwind brings a lot of new surprises to the game.' Among the new elements will be the first new faction introduced since Mage Knight Rebellion nine months ago; the Shyft will have the ability to manipulate Mage Spawn. MSRP will be $6.95.
The October release date will presumably give Lancers sufficient time to sell through before Whirlwind is released. Distributors are reporting that initial reorder activity on Lancers was light, as retailers had ordered heavily with their initial orders. Action has picked up in recent weeks, however, indicating that Lancers is selling through at retail and retailers are going back to the well. The October date will also give a nice kick-off to the Christmas season.
WizKids also announced that it has moved back the anticipated release date for Mage Knight Dungeons to early 2002 to avoid stepping on Whirlwinds and to provide more time for testing and tweaking. Weisman said of Dungeons, 'It was a good game. With the extra design time, it'll become a great game.' WizKids is also promising additional releases for November and December that have not yet been announced. The WizKids production schedule for the next few months, then, looks like this:
