Scott Dunbier, who stepped down as IDW Publishing's Special Projects Editor last week (see “IDW Layoffs, Departure”), has revealed the reason why he left his job after 16 years:  He is going to start his own publishing company.

Dunbier made the announcement in a Facebook post but said that all details are under wraps for now, including the name of the new company.

“In the weeks to come I will be filing paperwork to create it and I will periodically update via social media,” Dunbier said in the post.  “My goal is to announce my first books, assuming things go as planned, at San Diego Comic-Con in July.”

Dunbier was an Executive Editor at Wildstorm, which eventually became part of DC, from 1995 to 2007, and he started working at IDW Publishing in 2008.  At Wildstorm, he edited Alan Moore’s America’s Best Comics line, which included The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Promethea, and Tom Strong.  At IDW, he edited numerous Eisner Award-winning archival collections and created the deluxe Artist's Edition format, as well as editing the late Darwyn Cooke’s adaptations of Richard Stark’s Parker crime novels (see “‘The Outfit’”).

He has also edited a number of benefit anthologies, including the 2008 Liberty Comics (see “‘Liberty Comics’ Raises $27K for CBLDF”) and the 2022 Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds (see “Creators Band Together for ‘Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds’”).  In 2023, he received the Eisner Awards’ Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award.
