Magma Comix has announced it will publish the graphic novel Death Comes for the Toymaker, by writer Dakota Brown and artist Ryan Cody. This will be Magma’s first young adult graphic novel, and it completes a story that started out at Scout Comics.
Death Comes for the Toymaker puts a dark twist on the story of the kindly fellow who hands out toys on a special holiday. Gil is a toymaker who travels around the world once a year to deliver gifts to children, but he doesn’t just bring joy; he must also work for Death, harvesting the souls of those whose time has come. That starts to get old after a couple of millennia, and Gil is trying to figure out how to get out of his contract with Death. The 144-page paperback will be released to comic shops on November 6 and 7, 2024, and in bookstores on November 19.
Scout Comics solicited the first issue of Death Comes for the Toymaker for July 2023 but did not solicit any others after that. Brown was one of a number of creators who expressed dissatisfaction with Scout earlier this year, and in March he announced on Twitter that the rights to the series had been returned to him.
Magma was originally an imprint of Heavy Metal and recently relaunched with a number of comics veterans, including former IDW Publishing Managing Editor Denton J. Tipton, at the helm; their first two series debuted in April (see “Magma Comix Signs Distribution Deal with DBD”).
