Stonemaier Games has announced Finspan, a new spinoff of its hit title Wingspan that will feature aquatic life. Finspan will release in February 2025.
Finspan was created by David Gordon (Monkey Palace) and Stonemaier developer Michael O’Connell, based on Elizabeth Hargrave’s Wingspan design. In the new game, players compete as marine researchers diving into the depths to discover aquatic life in the Sunlight Zone, Twilight Zone, and Midnight Zone of the ocean, collecting and hatching fish eggs and raising young fish to form schools. Points can be earned from fish, eggs, young, schools, and by accomplishing achievements.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, Hargrave said, “Fish have been a surprisingly common request from Wingspan fans but I didn’t feel like I had the bandwidth to do them justice. So I’m absolutely delighted that someone else was available to take this one on. As I did with Wyrmspan, I played the game and weighed in on the design at several key points in the development process. It’s been such an interesting puzzle to help make games that feel like they’re in a family with Wingspan, while still delivering a different play experience.”
Finspan will feature FSC-certified components and artwork by Wingspan artist Ana Maria Martinez, as well as Catalina Martinez and Mesa Schumacher (Ecosystem: Coral Reef). The game includes 152 cards, 5 player mats, 1 achievement board with 9 achievement tiles, 30 diver pawns, 132 tokens, 5 player aids, and a score pad. It is intended for 1 to 5 players and takes about an hour to play.
Launched in 2019 (see “Stonemaier Broadens its ‘Wingspan’”), Wingspan has been a sturdy seller for Stonemaier, still holding a top-ten slot in ICv2’s list of top-sellers for summer 2024 (see “PRO: Board and Card Games Market Report and Summer 2024 Charts”). Since its release, the game has inspired a number of expansions as well as last year's dragon-themed version called Wyrmspan (see “Stonemaier Games Updates Deets on ‘Wyrmspan’”).
