Every title in the Top 20 is either manga or manhwa, as even the perennially best-selling TMNT: The Last Ronin has slipped below 20th place. Topping the January chart is the latest volume of Chainsaw Man, a series that was already selling well when the anime debuted in October 2022 and triggered a boom in sales. An anime film, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, is expected to premiere later this year; it is a direct sequel to the streaming anime.
Next up is the newest volume of Spy x Family, which also got a big push from its anime. In fact, most of the volumes on the chart are there because of anime, including Sakamoto Days, making its Top 20 debut in the same month that the anime began streaming. Vol. 13 of the Eisner Award-winning Witch Hat Atelier, another series making its Adult Top 20 debut, is one of the exceptions, but the anime is slated to premiere later this year, which may be building interest.
While anime fans make up a substantial part of the manga and manhwa audience, there’s another group that’s well represented in the Top 20 as well: buyers of deluxe editions. In January, as is the case most months, the first two volumes of Dark Horse’s deluxe edition of Berserk were on the chart, and this month they were joined by a new hardcover, Vagabond Definitive Edition, Vol. 1, an oversized omnibus edition of Takehiko Inoue’s historical seinen manga. Not quite in the same league as that $55 tome, but still a book with a little something extra, is Vol. 2 of Destroy All Humans. They Can’t Be Regenerated, a Magic: The Gathering manga that is priced a little higher than the standard paperback VIZ Media manga ($14.99 vs. $11.99) and comes with a Magic: The Gathering card.
