The top ten slots on the Author chart are taken up by the ten volumes of Solo Leveling. While that’s good news for the creative team and the folks at Ize Press, it indicates a certain weakness in this category of the market. A year ago, the Author chart included first volumes of three other manhwa titles and a new volume of Saga in addition to the eight then-published volumes of Solo Leveling (see "January 2024 Circana BookScan"). This year, eight of the bottom ten books on the Author chart are over six months old, and seven are over a year old. While these are all quality books that deserve to continue to sell well, it’s remarkable that there are no new titles or series working their way up.

The situation is similar, if not quite so dire, on the Superhero chart, where the top title is, as usual, TMNT: The Last Ronin. The sole January 2025 release in the top 20 is Doctor Doom: Books of Doom, a new collection of a 20-year-old series, and five of the nine 2024 releases are repackaged older material (four DC Compact Comics and Image’s G.I. Joe Compendium). Interestingly, the Compact Comics seem to be losing a bit of their luster in the book channel, as only four appear in the Top 20, and the standard edition of Watchmen outsold the Compact Comics version.

The manga chart, by contrast, includes seven January 2025 releases. Most of them are simply the newest volume of a long-running series, but two (Kagurabachi and Destroy All Humans…) are relatively new, and the others are at least giving readers fresh material, as well as catering to readers who come to the manga from the anime.
It’s also worth noting that while DC is trying to lure new readers by repackaging its older titles as low-priced Compact Comics, manga publishers are going in the opposite direction, with deluxe editions of Vagabond, which first appeared in English in 2001, and Berserk, which made its North American debut in 2003, both now in new upscale editions.
