Gold Circle Films, the company that produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding, is putting up $200 million to finance and co-develop ten feature films based on Platinum Studios' extensive library of independent comic book characters. Gold Circle Films is backed by billionaire Gateway Inc. co-founder Norm Waitt. Gold Circle put up half of the $5 million production cost of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which earned more than $350 million at the worldwide box office. Gold Circle, which recently signed a 'first look' deal with Universal, will see its production of feature films rise from four to eight films per year as a result of the deal.
Four of the ten projects have been announced including Seen, a thriller about a photographer, who accidentally photographs a crime, Casting Shadows, the intriguing story of a group of gamers whose harmless D&D type games suddenly turn deadly, Book of Mercury, which is based on an Alan Moore story about a magical book with the power to rewrite the future, and Law & Order, a comedy adventure featuring an FBI agent who is forced to team up with his tough cop father and his fiery liberal mother-in-law. Production on these four projects could start as early as next year.
