Dark Horse Comics has announced its first solo Dungeons & Dragons comic under its new license with Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast: Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks, by writer Greg Pak, penciller Wilton Santos, inker Edvan Alves, colorist Raul Angulo, and letterer Nate Piekos.  The four-issue miniseries will spotlight The Fallbacks, a ragtag band of misfits who first appeared in the 2024 novel The Fallbacks: Bound for Ruin, by Jaleigh Johnson (see “Random House Worlds Announces New ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Novel”).  The first issue will be released on October 15, 2025, with covers by Marguerite Sauvage, Uzuri, Stephen Segovia, and Dan Panosian.  In addition, each of the four issues will have back cover art by Julie Dillon which will connect to form an homage to illustrator J.C. Leyendecker.

The new miniseries marks the first comics appearance of the Fallbacks, a band consisting of Tess, an elf; Anson, a human fighter; Cazrin, a human wizard; Lark, a tiefling bard; Baldric, dwarf cleric; and Uggie, their otyugh companion, all of whom have strong, quirky personalities.  In the comic, the group sets out on a quest for fame and treasure but ends up in a feud with a group of very annoying local adventurers.

“When I read the Jaleigh Johnson prose novel where the Fallbacks first appeared, my primary takeaway, which is also my highest praise, was that it felt like an actual D&D campaign I might play with my funniest, most subversive, and biggest-hearted friends,” Pak said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

The Fallbacks is a fast-paced, character-driven adventure full of heart, humor, and heroic mayhem—the kind of story that reminds you why you fell in love with Dungeons & Dragons in the first place,” added Paul Morrissey, D&D Publishing Lead at Wizards of the Coast.

Dark Horse signed a licensing deal with Wizards of the Coast in 2024 for D&D and Magic: The Gathering comics (see “Dark Horse Nabs ‘Dungeons & Dragons,’ ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Licenses”).  They published the crossover miniseries Stranger Things and Dungeons & Dragons: The Rise of Hellfire earlier this year. Previously, IDW Publishing had been publishing D&D comics since 2010 and BOOM! Studios got the Magic license in 2021.
