Wizards of the Coast announced two new Magic: The Gathering Commander formats, which can be scheduled for WPN in-store play soon.

WotC is expanding Magic's most popular format for in-store play, beginning with the launch of the Edge of Eternities set (see "'Magic: The Gathering - Edge of Eternities'"). One of the formats, Commander Box League, will be a new limited format that encourages purchases of an entire box of Play Boosters. The rules for Commander Box League are as follows:

  • Each player buys a single Play Booster box, chooses a commander from the box, and constructs a 60-card Commander deck out of the cards found in the box (basic lands can be added into the pool).

  • Decks can contain more than one copy of a single card. The chosen Commander's color identity doesn't apply to deck construction. Anything found in the Play Booster box can be played, including the Buy-a-Box promos and Box Topper.

  • Players then use this booster box to play league games that occur in four-person pods (like normal Commander games).

The second Commander format made available for WPN play is Commander Two-Headed Giant. This format is a two-on-two format, and operates much like it does for the non-Commander version of the format: Players pair up in teams of two and share life totals, spells, and strategy in an effort to defeat the other team.
