Columbia Tri-Star has released the French/International production Blueberry (2004) under the title Renegade. The characters are based on the justly acclaimed French graphic novel series by Moebius (Jean Giraud) and J.M. Charlier, but unfortunately director Jan Konen decided not to appropriate Charlier's clever historically-based plotlines or Moebius' stunning sun-drenched visuals. The result is a grungy mess (with the single saving grace of a Juliette Lewis skinny-dipping scene) that owes as much to El Topo as to Lt. Blueberry and has failed to find any kind of success with critics in Europe or the U.S. Still, fans of the Blueberry graphic novels, some of which were published in the U.S by Marvel, will likely want to see what damage was done to one of the best western comic book series of all time.
