Karl Ancell, manager of Lone Star Comics in Hurst, Texas describes his first Free Comic book Day -- 'a great success:'

Although I've been with Lone Star Comics for almost two years now, amazingly enough this was the first Free Comic Book Day that I have worked.  To start things off, we placed the table of free books at the back of the store.  We placed footprints on the floor leading in two different paths from the front door to the table.

My favorite experience of the day has to have been opening.  When I opened the store, we already had two families waiting outside - two fathers with three children total.  It was apparent that the children were not aware of what the event was, as we could here from outside the store 'Daddy, why are we here ... I don't want to be here...' etcetera.  Upon opening the doors, the children saw the trail of footprints, and immediately began following them.  When they reached the table, they were greeted by one of my employees, who showed each of them a few of the comics.  Much screaming and giggling later, the children were out the door.  This scene replayed itself several times throughout the next several hours, only to be made more hilarious as the footprints were pulled free, placed in random spots (sometimes turning back on themselves), or else leading to somewhere else in the store, and in one case watching one eight-year old placing one of the prints on his father's back.

All in all, it was a great success, and I look forward to hosting more of these events.
