John Gavin of York Comics & Cards in Parma, Ohio saw the negative response to the suggestion of a Friday street date for comics from Andy Battaglia of Comics Etc. (see 'Andy Battaglia of Comics Etc. on Friday Comic Street Dates'), and agreed:

I have to agree with Andy Battaglia of Comics Etc.  A Friday street date would create two extra dead days of sales.  At my store the only dead day is Tuesday.  I opened up in 1993, at which time Wednesday was already the street date.  I do remember before that most stores in my area closed on Wednesday because of lack of business.  I would not enjoy going back to those days.

I do agree that product should be shipped to stores on Tuesday, for a Wednesday street date.  We seem to be one of the few businesses that do not receive product in advance of the street date.  A number of stores in our area received our merchandise from Diamond on Tuesday's during December last year.  I realize that it was a fluke in the UPS system and shouldn't have happened.  However it was nice to be able to put out the merchandise, log it into the computer and do my customer pulls without feeling rushed.  As far as I know, no stores in my area that received the merchandise early broke the street date.

I am in a very competetive area.  I have to pick up my merchandise at UPS on Wednesday morning to guarantee that the product will be out when I open.  I am not the only store that does this.  I do it because UPS delivers at different times during the day.  Some stores receive UPS deliveries before 11am.  My driver does not deliver until 3PM.  Even with a uniform Wednesday street date some of my competitors would have the merchandise available for sale up to 6 hours before I would receive mine, if I didn't pick up at UPS.

Knowing the nature of our business, enforcement would not be a problem.  Stores would report if merchandise was for sale earlier that it should be.
