Fantasy Flight Games CEO Christian Petersen, in a posting on the company's Website, has announced plans to release numerous products in its CCG and boardgame categories in 2006, while discontinuing support for almost all of its roleplaying lines, due to what Petersen called 'a crippling overall softness in this market.' Midnight will be the major exception; three new supplements for the Midnight RPG are planned for 2006, including Legends of Shadow, slated for release in March. The long-delayed Grimm RPG is also scheduled for release in February.
In the board game category, FFG's most successful product line, an ambitious release schedule is planned. Releases slated for the 'first part of the year' include Britannia, Fury of Dracula, the Runebound: Midnight expansion; War of the Ring: Battle of the Third Age in March; and Warrior Knights in April. The long-awaited and long-delayed Marvel Heroes boardgame is planned for June. Expansions are planned for Arkham Horror (Dunwich Horror, in early summer), Descent: Journeys in theDark, World of Warcraft, Runebound, Twilight Imperium and others. New editions of Drakon, Cave Troll, and Mag Blast are also planned.
FFG is adding staff to assist in new player acquisition for its CCGs and handle player events. In the first quarter, the Call of Cthulhu: Eldritch Edition Premium Starter will be released this month, and A Game of Thrones CCG: Winter Edition Premium Starters in March. The next base set for A Game of Thrones will be released at Gen Con in August.
FFG is also planning some non-game releases, including its first novel (this fall), art books, and several 2007 calendars.
Petersen offered regrets for the many release delays FFG experienced in 2005, but noted that it was still a record year with many very successful releases. Additional staff has been added for 2006, and the manufacturers with which the company works expanded, to make it less vulnerable to delays this year.
