Variety is reporting that X Filme and Celluloid Dreams have joined forces to produce Grass Roots, a stop-motion animated feature film starring the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.  Freak Brothers creator Gilbert Shelton and Paul Davies have written the script, which Dave Borthwick (Tom Thumb) will direct.

Grass Roots, not to be confused with the identically-titled fifth issue of the comic book series in which the boys stumble on to a major cocaine stash and move to the country, is an updated Freak Brothers adventure in which the perpetually stoned trio scores a bundle of cash and genetically engineered pot seeds from Norbert the Narc.  The fully-baked hipsters then attempt to create a communal rural paradise where they can raise their hellacious herb, but complications ensue.

The success of Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, both of which were nominated for the 'Best Animated Feature Film' Academy Award, has given new impetus to the venerable stop-motion animation genre, which, in 2005 at least, more than held its own against the rising tide of computer animation.
