Marvel announced a number of projects at San Diego including an ongoing HALO comic based on the popular video game and the reconstruction of the 'lost' Lee/Kirby issue of the Fantastic Four, but the most important announcement for most pop culture retailers was The Mighty Avengers, a new series that will be written by Brian Michael Bendis, who also pens the popular New Avengers (currently a top-five title).

Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) will provide the art for the new series and Bendis promises a narrative style that will be distinctly different from the approach he has used to great effect in The New Avengers.

With the popularity of Bendis's New Avengers and Allan Heinberg's Young Avengers, the addition of a third series with major sales potential would indicate that The Avengers has the super-group potential to become a property that rivals the X-Men in sales and importance, if not in the number of on-going series.
