SLG Publishing has announced that the GloomCookie comic book series will end with issue #28.  After the publication of the fifth GloomCookie trade paperback collection, which will collect issues #24 through #28, writer and series co-creator Serena Valentino will continue to work on new original GloomCookie graphic novels with the series' current artist, Vincent Batignole.

GloomCookie, which combines elements of dark fantasy, fairy tales, and character drama with a pure goth culture sensibility, has found favor with readers who, according to Slave Labor EIC Jennifer de Guzman, prefer trade paperback collections to periodical comics.  While the GloomCookie audience is not the typical comic shop crowd, it is an audience that is hungry for more works that reflect its iconoclastic world view -- and in the words of Berkeley-based comic retailer Rory Root, it is an audience 'that is underserved by the current market.'

Throughout its eight-year run GloomCookie has showcased the talents of five different artists, Ted Naifeh, John Gebbia, Breehn Burns, Harley Sparx, and Vincent Batignole.  The final periodical issue of the series (#28) will be in stores in September.
