The hugely hyped, high concept fright fest, Snakes on a Plane dropped 58% in its second weekend of release, earning an estimated $5.8 million and averaging a meager $1648 per venue (about the same per theater average as The Devil Wears Prada, which has been in theaters for nine weeks). Snakes, which cost $33 million to produce, looks like it will finish its theatrical run south of $40 million and will look to make its mark on DVD. After its dismal sophomore session theater managers are undoubtedly paraphrasing Snake's Samuel L. Jackson infamous exhortation with their own version: 'Get this motherbleeping movie out of my motherbleeping multiplex.' Needless to say Snake's performance so far does not bode well for the R-rated film's tie-in merchandise, which includes comic books and a novelization.
Disney's inspirational football drama Invincible took the top spot with an estimated $17 million, while Talladega Nights hung on in second place and the surprising road comedy Little Miss Sunshine, which is looking more and more like the sleeper hit of the summer, motored into third place.
After seven weeks in the top ten Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men's Chest dropped to #11, earning an estimated $4 million and bringing its amazing total to $407 million, surpassing Spider-Man for number six all-time on the domestic box office list. Pirates is doing even better overseas and will likely pass the billion dollar mark in total global box office.
For the second straight weekend the total take of the top 20 films was down from 2005's anemic total for the same frame.
