Variety is reporting that Battlestar Galactica producer David Eick has received a commitment to create a new version of the Universal TV series The Bionic Woman for the NBC television network. Eick, who helped re-engineer Battlestar Galactica to reflect our post-9/11 society, plans to perform a similar sort of makeover on The Bionic Woman with the help of screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis. The new Bionic Woman will focus on the plight of the role-juggling modern professional woman by, as Eick explained to Variety, 'using the idea of artificial technology as a metaphor for what contemporary women sometimes feel is necessary to do everything that needs to be done.'
Ms. Kalogridis is no stranger to the world of super-powered women. She created the short-lived Birds of Prey series for the WB, and also wrote The Pathfinder graphic novel published by Dark Horse. Currently she is involved in writing a number of screenplays including two for James Cameron, The Dive and BattleAngel (based on the Battle Angel Alita manga).
The original Bionic Woman series was a spin-off from The Six Million Dollar Man and lasted for 58 episodes spread over three seasons from 1976 through 1978. Charlton Comics published a short-lived Bionic Woman comic book from 1976-1977.
