According to Variety, Death Note: The Last Name made more than $10 million in its opening weekend in Japan, putting it on track to surpass box office sales of the first Death Note film.

The popularity of this new release bodes well for future interest in the States since the Death Note manga series (published by Viz) is a consistent top seller here, recently coming in as the #6 Top Manga Property (see 'ICv2 Top Ten Most Powerful') .

Anime News Service also recently reported that the Death Note anime series (see ''Death Note' Goes Global') has been licensed for the North American market in 2007, but did not name the licensee.
