Fandom has announced that it's named Debra Streicker-Fine as its new CEO, replacing founder Mark Young, who will continue to act in an 'advisory' capacity. Streicker-Fine was most recently an independent consultant and previously was president of Digital Domain, the special effects house that did the effects for Titanic. James Cameron was a founder and the chairman of Digital Domain. She also founded Cloud 9, a venture-funded cd-rom producer that licensed Marvel properties, among others, for cd-rom products. Prior to Cloud 9, Streicker-Fine had management positions at MCA and Republic Pictures and Disney Interactive.
The replacement of former investment banker Young, who founded the company and led it through two rounds of venture financing comes in the wake of 20% staff cuts earlier this year. The staff cuts were attributed to job replications from recent acquisitions, which included Cinescape Magazine, Cinescape.com, and Creation Entertainment. The company is seeking to become profitable in 2001.
Fandom raised its second round of $16 million in February, 2000. Using our Internet company headcount burn rate calculator the company will probably run out of money this year. Whether additional financing is required to get to break-even, and whether Streicker-Fine's appointment is a condition of new investments is unknown. No reason was given for the change.
