FUNimation Productions has announced the acquisition of the 26-episode Aquarion (Sousei no Aquarion, literally 'Genesis of Aquarion') anime series produced by Satelight in 2005.  Set in a post-apocalyptic Earth where two-thirds of the population has been killed and the remainder is being ravaged by giant robots harvesting humans on behalf of 'Fallen Angels,' Aquarion blends fantasy with science fiction elements from series such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Fafner.  Humanity's last hopes reside in three 'Vector' machines salvaged from the sea floor and piloted by specially trained teens.  As in Getter Robot the three Vector machines can combine into one super powerful Aquarion device.

Famed mecha designer and anime director Shoji Kawamori (Macross, Escaflowne, Crusher Joe, Eureka 7) is the driving force behind the Aquarion series, which he helped write, produce, direct and design, and fans who enjoy mecha-heavy science fiction anime should certainly like this series.  For others the musical score by Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop) will be the main attraction.  FUNimation plans to release the first disk in this series in the fall of 2007.
