Alexander Payne, who is known for helming quirky, often darkly satirical films (Election, About Schmidt, Sideways), is already on board for an adaptation of Daniel Clowes’ Wilson as a producer, and may well end up directing the film as well.  Certainly it appears that Payne has the right sensibility for the project, which is based on Clowes’ most recent exercise in misanthropic misery, which was published by Drawn & Quarterly last April.

According to the Latino Review, Clowes is working on a screenplay for Wilson, which follows the trials and tribulations of a bitter divorced middle-aged man who repeatedly attempts to re-engage life, but invariably slips back into solipsistic despair.  Don’t be surprised that if the project does come to fruition, it reunites Payne with his Sideways star Paul Giamatti in the title role.
