Kealan O’Rourke has been named to rewrite the movie version of Emily the Strange, according to The Wrap, a new try for a film that’s been in development for nearly a decade.
O’Rourke is listed at IMDB as "award-winning Irish director working in both live action and animation." It lists several Irish Film Board award winning shorts, including The Boy in the Bubble and Fairycatcher.
The Emily the Strange movie is based on the Dark Horse graphic novels. The movie is still set to star Chloe Grace Moretz (Hit Girl from Kick-Ass, see "Chloe Moritz in 'Emily the Strange''") as the sharp-witted thirteen-year-old goth girl. The previous incarnation of the script was written by Melisa Wallack (who wrote Mirror Mirror).
The project is still in development at Universal, and this is the first real update since 2011 (see "'Snow White' Scribe Pens 'Emily the Strange'"). The movie project was announced back in 2005 (see "Fox Prepping 'Strange' Brew"), based on the character created in 1993 by Rob Reger and his company Cosmic Debris. Dark Horse Entertainment’s founder and president, Mike Richardson, is attached to produce; with Dark Horse’s Keith Goldberg to executive produce.
