The World of Warcraft movie, titled Warcraft, will be released by Legendary Pictures and Universal on December 18, 2015, according to a tweet from the official World of Warcraft twitter account yesterday afternoon.
This follows the news released at the end of August that the film had received a go-ahead to begin production in January (see "'Warcraft' Movie Production Set") under director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), based on a script by Jones and Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond, K-PAX) and a story by game designer Chris Metzen.
Announcement of the film goes all the way back to 2006, when the property, based on Activision Blizzard Inc’s poplar online game property was optioned by Legendary Pictures- then with Warner Bros. (see "'Warcraft' Heads to the Big Screen"). Legendary Pictures signed a five year production and co-financing partnership with Universal (starting in 2014) back in July, and this is the first project they have announced together.
Besides the multiplayer online role-playing game (which counted 7.7 million subscribers in July, according to a company press release), there are comic books, novels, tabletop games and a magazine. Sadly, the CCG recently announced its last set (see "'WoW TCG' Calls It Quits").
