IDW Publishing has announced it will launch a comic series based on the Topps 1980s Garbage Pail Kids trading card property, in time for the dumpster darlings’ 30th anniversary in 2015.
Peter Bagge (Hate), who provided this initial image of new character Comic-Con Ron, will be one of several creators to work on the new series, which is planned as an anthology of loosely connected stories. Other names involved in the rotating creative team have not been announced, other than series editor Denton J. Tipton, but IDW teased it will include some of Topps’ official GPK artists.
The Garbage Pail Kids were created by Art Spiegelman, along with Mark Newgarden, John Pound, Tom Bunk and other avant-garde artists in 1985 as part of the Topps Company’s sticker trading card line. The original cards spawned 15 series that were released in the U.S., with various other updated series released over the years. It was adapted into a live-action movie in August 1987 that was universally panned; and a cartoon series was produced, but was never aired in the U.S. due to controversial themes and widespread protests from children’s television activist groups.
