An article by George Gene Gustines in the Sunday New York Times looks at the latest efforts to diversify the race, ethnicity, and sexual preference of the superhero characters (and audience) at Marvel and DC.  Receiving prominent attention in the article (and creating the potential for increased interest among consumers this week) are the DC characters Blue Beetle (a Mexican teenager), Batwoman (the 'lipstick lesbian' version coming up in July in 52), and the Great Ten (a Chinese superhero team); and Marvel's Black Panther-Storm wedding and Luke Cage's role in New Avengers.

Gustines also does a nice job of exploring past, mostly unsuccessful attempts by the Big Two to incorporate more diverse characters into their books, and quotes DC's Dan Didio, Marvel's Joe Quesada, Reginald Hudlin (who's writing Black Panther, see 'Black Panther-Storm Nuptials Detailed'), and writer Judd Winick on the new efforts and why they may be more successful.
