CCP Games has announced cancellation of its long gestating massively multiplayer online game based on White Wolf’s World of Darkness, in conjunction with the termination of 56 employees at the Atlanta studio, the company announced.
"The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make. I have always loved and valued the idea of a sandbox experience set in that universe," CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson said in a statement. "To our current and former employees and fans of World of Darkness, I am truly sorry that we could not deliver the experience that we aspired to make. We dreamed of a game that would transport you completely into the sweeping fantasy of World of Darkness, but had to admit that our efforts were falling regretfully short. One day I hope we will make it up to you."
CCP announced that some team members have been offered roles on other company projects, and that it will provide severance packages and job placement assistance to affected workers.
CCP, which merged with White Wolf Publishing, Inc in 2006 (see "CCP and White Wolf to Merge"), originally announced the game for release in 2012 (see "'WoD' MMO in 2012"). But production slowed when CCP began cutting White Wolf employees in 2011 (see "CCP Cuts White Wolf Staff").
At Gen Con 2012, Onyx Path Publishing announced it had become licensee for the production of World of Darkness titles (classic and new) as well as Exalted, and CCP Games/White Wolf would not continue to produce table-top RPGs.
So with the shutdown of the World of Darkness MMO, CCP is totally out of producing anything related to the property, and is now exclusively devoted to its flagship property, EVE Online.
