At the Spiel game fair in Essen, Germany, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast announced plans to release a new tactical miniatures game based on the Magic: The Gathering CCG property in Fall 2015.
The official name of the game has not been released, but is being referenced by the placeholder title Magic: The Gathering Strategy Board Game. The game is being co-developed by WotC and Hasbro’s “team responsible for Risk Legacy and Heroscape” (see "WotC Ending Heroscape Line" and "'Risk: Legacy'").
The game is aimed at strategy game players, as well as M:TG players, though the game does not incorporate the card game itself. Rather it takes place in the Magic universe, and will include many references to and elements from the card game. Magic cards are not used in the game, but several mechanics (deathtouch, flying, first strike) from the CCG are incorporated.
Set in the world of Shandalar, players take the role of one of five iconic Planeswalkers (Chandra Nalaar, Jace Beleren, Nissa Revane, Liliana Vess , and a fifth to be named later) and then customize the battlefield by designing the map, placing terrain and power glyphs in various locations to aid their battle. The players then move their figure and creature squads around the map to out-maneuver opponents. Players will cast spells, summon creature squads, and tap unique Planeswalker abilities in an effort to defeat their opponents. The game is for 2-5 players, and plays in 25-45 minutes (depending on number of players and experience level).
The game will be available through both hobby distribution and through mass market retailers. MSRP was not announced.
